Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We’ve got answers. If you’re unsure where to start, our free trial is the best way to experience Rising Sun Martial Arts.
-
Not at all. Most of our students start with no previous martial arts experience. Our classes are designed to meet you where you’re at, and coaches will guide you step by step as you learn the fundamentals.
-
Your free trial lets you experience our training environment, coaching style, and class structure before making any commitment. You’ll take part in a regular class, train at your own pace, and have time afterward to ask questions and see if it’s the right fit for you.
-
We ask that you book your trial in advance so we can make sure a coach is ready to welcome you and guide you through your first session. It helps us give you the best possible experience from the moment you arrive.
-
When you arrive, one of our coaches will greet you, show you around, and explain how the class will run. You’ll be introduced to the basics, partnered appropriately, and encouraged to train comfortably at your own pace. There’s no pressure to perform or “keep up.”
-
Comfortable workout clothes are perfect — a t-shirt and shorts or leggings. You don’t need any special equipment for your trial. If you decide to continue, we’ll guide you through any uniform or gear requirements later.
-
Arriving 10–15 minutes early is ideal. This gives us time to check you in, answer questions, and help you settle in without rushing.
-
That’s completely normal — and very common. Trying something new takes courage. Our coaches are used to working with nervous beginners and will make sure you feel supported, respected, and comfortable from the start.
-
Safety is a priority. Training is progressive, controlled, and supervised by experienced instructors. We focus on good communication, appropriate pairings, and building skills gradually rather than throwing people into the deep end.
-
You’ll train with people at similar experience levels, and sometimes alongside more experienced students who help maintain a safe and supportive environment. No one is expected to know things they haven’t been taught.
-
No. You train to get fit, not because you already are. Fitness improves naturally as you train, and you’re always encouraged to work within your current limits.
-
Not at all. Many students train for confidence, fitness, skill development, and personal growth. Competition is optional and never expected.
-
Our kids programs are age-specific and designed to suit different stages of development. You can find exact age ranges on our timetable, or contact us if you’re unsure which class is best for your child.
-
Beyond physical skills, children develop:
Confidence and resilience
Focus and discipline
Respect for others
Problem-solving and emotional control
Our goal is to help kids grow both on and off the mats.
-
Classes are structured, closely supervised, and age-appropriate. We emphasise control, cooperation, and positive behaviour, creating an environment where children can learn confidently and safely.
-
Yes. Parents are welcome to observe. We also encourage healthy independence as children settle in, but you’re never excluded from your child’s training journey.
-
If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help. During your trial, a coach can talk with you about your goals and recommend a style that suits your interests, experience level, and reasons for training.
-
Yes. Many students explore multiple styles over time. There’s no pressure to commit to more than one — you can progress naturally as your interests develop.
-
No. There’s no obligation after your free trial. We want you to continue because you enjoy training and see value in it, not because you feel locked in.
-
After your trial, we’ll answer any questions you have and outline membership options clearly. You’ll have time to decide what feels right for you, with no pressure.
-
