Years of experience and dedication to the art
Samuel Pitts
Samuel Pitts is one of the founding members and head instructor of Rising Sun Martial Arts. With over 20 years of martial arts training to his name, Sam is experienced in all of the club’s disciplines, Sam brings a strongly conceptual approach to coaching, focusing on understanding why techniques are used and when they should be applied. He believes martial arts should build confidence through competence; as skill increases, resilience grows, and vice versa. Sam’s goal is for students to leave the club more adaptable; if they can learn to defend a punch or escape a choke hold, they should also develop the problem-solving skills needed to meet challenges beyond the dojo.
Head CoachMegan Pitts
Megan Pitts is one of the founding instructors of Rising Sun Martial Arts. With over 15 years of martial arts training, Megan specialises in Zen Do Kai Karate and has reached the Master level of 4th Degree Black Belt. She brings an extremely practical mindset to her classes, focusing on techniques that can be applied beyond the dojo. Megan believes martial arts should be for everyone, particularly those who may be struggling to find a sense of belonging elsewhere; as skill is built, so too are confidence and relationships. Her goal is for students to develop strong self-defence and social skills, enabling them to de-escalate most situations and confidently handle the ones they cannot avoid.
Senior CoachDamian Pitts is one of the founding instructors of Rising Sun Martial Arts. With over 15 years of martial arts training, Damian has experience across all of the club’s styles. He brings a relaxed and collaborative approach to training, focusing on problem-solving and guiding students toward their own conclusions. Damian believes martial arts should be practical, particularly when applied to self-defence and the defence of others; as skill develops, students should be able to use multiple tools to solve the same problem. His goal is for students to never have to use the skills he teaches — because awareness, forethought, and sound judgement can prevent danger before it ever becomes a fight.

Head Coach Muay ThaiDavid Sharples
David Sharples is one of the founding members of Rising Sun Martial Arts and coaches across multiple styles. With over 16 years of martial arts training, Dave is experienced in all of the club’s disciplines, with a particular specialisation in Krav Maga. He brings a relaxed, supportive, and concept-driven approach to coaching, focusing on building real-world confidence through pressure testing, understanding why techniques work, and developing the ability to feel and read situations as they unfold. Dave encourages students to challenge themselves while growing at their own pace and believes martial arts should build confidence and develop resilience under pressure. His goal is for students to leave the club more confident and capable; if they can stay calm, problem-solve, and perform under pressure on the mats, they can carry that same confidence and awareness into everyday life.
